Hagar
HAY-gar · from Hagar · means “Flight, stranger”
Hagar is a Hebrew name meaning "flight" or "stranger." She was Sarah's Egyptian maidservant who fled into the wilderness, where she became the first person in Scripture to give God a name: El Roi, the God who sees me. Her story is one of desperation met by divine mercy.
“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."”
The story behind the name
Hagar was an outsider in Abraham's camp, caught in a painful conflict between Abraham and Sarah. Pregnant with Ishmael and mistreated by Sarah, she fled into the harsh desert, feeling completely alone and forgotten. There, the angel of the Lord met her by a spring of water, speaking promises over her son's future.
Stunned by God's personal care, Hagar declared that she had seen the One who saw her, naming the well Beer Lahai Roi. Years later, when she was sent away into the desert again and ran out of water, God heard the boy's cry and opened her eyes to see a well. He promised to make Ishmael a great nation.
Hagar's story reveals that God is not only the God of the powerful, but also the protector of the lonely stranger. A daughter named Hagar carries a legacy of being seen and loved by God in her lowest moments. Her name reminds us that no wilderness is too dry for God's provision.
