Joan

JOHN · means The Lord is gracious

Joan is a feminine form of John, meaning "the Lord is gracious." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it comes from the same root as John the Baptist and John the Apostle, both men whose lives and writing centered on the grace and love of God.

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:8 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Joan was among the most popular American girls' names of the 1930s and 1940s, and though its use has settled since, it remains a recognizable, dignified classic.

John the Apostle wrote more directly about love than any other New Testament author, declaring simply, "God is love" (1 John 4:8). He had walked closely with Jesus and later reflected on that relationship in letters full of warmth and clarity.

John's Gospel opens by calling Jesus the Word who "became flesh and made his dwelling among us," full of grace and truth (John 1:14). A daughter named Joan carries a name rooted in that same steady conviction, that God's grace is real and near.

A blessing to pray over Joan

Father, let this daughter know Your grace so fully that she cannot help but love others the way You have loved her. Amen.
