Joanna
joh-AN-uh · from Yochanah · means “God is gracious”
Joanna is a Hebrew name meaning "God is gracious," a feminine form of John. Wife of Chuza, an official in Herod's household, Joanna was healed and became one of the women who supported Jesus' ministry financially, later one of the first witnesses to the empty tomb (Luke 8:3; 24:10).
“It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.”
The story behind the name
Joanna was married to Chuza, the manager of Herod's household, giving her a position of some means and standing. Luke tells us that Joanna, along with other women who had been healed by Jesus, traveled with Him and the disciples and helped support their ministry out of their own resources (Luke 8:1-3).
Joanna's devotion carried through to the darkest days of Jesus' death. She was among the women who prepared spices to anoint His body and went to the tomb early on the first day of the week, only to find it empty.
Joanna was one of the women who ran to tell the apostles that Jesus had risen, though at first the disciples did not believe them (Luke 24:10-11). A daughter named Joanna carries a name of God's grace and the joy of being among the very first to proclaim the resurrection.
A blessing to pray over Joanna
Father, may this daughter know the grace her name proclaims and carry the same joyful devotion as Joanna, quick to give generously and quick to proclaim what You have done. Amen.
