John

JON · from Yochanan · means Yahweh is gracious

John comes from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh is gracious" or "God is gracious." John was one of Jesus' closest disciples, known as the one Jesus loved, and he later wrote a Gospel, three letters, and Revelation, all centered on the grace and love of God.

One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
John 13:23 (NIV)

The story behind the name

John and his brother James left their fishing nets to follow Jesus, becoming part of an inner circle present at the transfiguration and in Gethsemane. John's own Gospel refers to him simply as "the disciple whom Jesus loved," a title of quiet affection rather than pride (John 13:23).

At the cross, Jesus entrusted His own mother to John's care, a tender act in the middle of unbearable suffering (John 19:26-27). John outlived the other apostles, and tradition holds he continued shepherding the church in Ephesus into old age.

In exile on Patmos, John received the visions recorded in Revelation, a book of judgment and hope ending in a new heaven and a new earth. A boy named John carries a name that means grace itself, and a life spent close to Jesus' heart.

A blessing to pray over John

Father, may this son know he is loved by You just as John was, close to Your heart and full of Your grace. Let his life echo Your love to everyone he meets. Amen.
