Joel

JOHL · from Yoel · means The Lord is God

Joel is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord is God," combining two Hebrew names for God into one declaration. The prophet Joel called Judah to repentance after a devastating locust plague and promised a future day when God would pour out His Spirit on all people, a promise Peter quoted at Pentecost.

And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
Joel 2:28 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Joel wrote after a locust swarm had stripped the land bare, describing the devastation in vivid detail and calling the people to repentance, fasting, and prayer. "Rend your heart and not your garments," he urged, pointing past outward ritual to genuine turning toward God (Joel 2:13).

Joel promised that beyond judgment lay restoration, that God would repay the years the locusts had eaten and pour out His Spirit on all people, sons and daughters, old and young alike (Joel 2:28). It was an astonishing promise of the Spirit reaching every kind of person.

On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up and declared that Joel's promise was being fulfilled before the crowd's eyes (Acts 2:16-17). A boy named Joel carries a name declaring that the Lord is God, tied to a promise of restoration and the Spirit poured out on all people.

A blessing to pray over Joel

Lord, may this son know that You alone are God, and may Your Spirit be poured out over his whole life, restoring whatever the years take from him. Amen.
