Malachi

MAL-uh-ky · from Malakhi · means My messenger

Malachi is a Hebrew name meaning "my messenger." As the last prophet of the Old Testament, Malachi challenged a spiritually weary people to renew their worship and faithfulness, and closed the Old Testament with a promise of a coming messenger who would prepare the way before the Lord.

See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me.
Malachi 3:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Malachi confronted a discouraged, post-exile people who had grown careless in worship, offering God blemished sacrifices and shortchanging Him in their tithes. "Will a mere mortal rob God?" he asked pointedly, calling the people back to wholehearted devotion (Malachi 3:8).

Yet Malachi's book is not only rebuke. He promised that those who feared the Lord's name would see "the sun of righteousness rise with healing in its wings" (Malachi 4:2), a beautiful image of restoration for the faithful.

Malachi closes the Old Testament with a promise that God would send a messenger to prepare the way, a prophecy the Gospels connect to John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus (Malachi 3:1, Matthew 11:10). A boy named Malachi carries a name pointing forward, a messenger's name for a life that points others to Christ.

A blessing to pray over Malachi

Lord, make this son a faithful messenger of Your goodness, wholehearted in worship and always pointing others toward Jesus. Amen.
