Hosea
hoh-ZAY-uh · from Hoshea · means “Salvation”
Hosea is a Hebrew name meaning "salvation," from the same root as the name Joshua. God called Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman as a living picture of Israel's unfaithfulness and God's relentless, redeeming love. His book is one of Scripture's most tender portrayals of divine mercy.
“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.”
The story behind the name
God told Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman who would be unfaithful to him, so that Hosea's own marriage would mirror Israel's unfaithfulness to God (Hosea 1). It was a painful, costly calling, one that turned Hosea's private life into a public message.
Even after Gomer's betrayal, God told Hosea to go and love her again, buying her back at a price, just as God kept pursuing His wandering people (Hosea 3). The book is filled with images of a father teaching a child to walk and a husband refusing to give up on his bride.
Through Hosea, God declared, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," a phrase Jesus himself would later quote (Hosea 6:6). A boy named Hosea carries a name of salvation and steadfast love, the kind that keeps pursuing even when it is not deserved.
A blessing to pray over Hosea
Father, may this son know Your relentless love the way Hosea's life displayed it, and may he grow into someone who shows mercy freely to others. Amen.
