Joshua

JOSH-oo-uh · from Yehoshua · means The Lord is salvation

Joshua is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord is salvation." He served as Moses' assistant, was one of only two spies who trusted God's promise about Canaan, and later led Israel across the Jordan into the promised land. His name has stood for courage and faithful obedience ever since.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Joshua served faithfully at Moses' side for decades, first as a young aide and then as one of twelve spies sent into Canaan. While ten spies came back with fear, Joshua and Caleb urged the people to trust God's promise, though it cost them the support of the crowd (Numbers 14).

After Moses died, God commissioned Joshua to lead Israel into the land, telling him three times to be strong and courageous (Joshua 1). Joshua obeyed, leading the people across the Jordan on dry ground and watching the walls of Jericho fall exactly as God had said.

Near the end of his life, Joshua gathered Israel and challenged them to choose whom they would serve, declaring his own house would serve the Lord (Joshua 24). A boy named Joshua carries a name that points straight to the greater deliverer who would share it, Jesus.

A blessing to pray over Joshua

Lord, make this son strong and courageous like Joshua, ready to trust Your promises even when others hesitate. May his whole house serve You all his days. Amen.
