Benjamin
BEN-juh-min · from Binyamin · means “Son of the right hand”
Benjamin is a Hebrew name meaning "son of the right hand," the name Jacob gave his youngest son after his mother Rachel, dying in childbirth, had called him Ben-Oni, son of my sorrow. Benjamin became Jacob's beloved youngest and the ancestor of one of Israel's twelve tribes.
“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.”
The story behind the name
Benjamin was born on the road near Bethlehem, and his mother Rachel, dying from the difficult labor, named him Ben-Oni, son of my sorrow. His father Jacob renamed him Benjamin, son of the right hand, turning grief into a name of strength and honor (Genesis 35).
As Jacob's youngest, Benjamin was deeply cherished, especially after his brother Joseph was believed dead. When famine forced Jacob's sons to Egypt, Jacob was terrified to let Benjamin go, not knowing that Joseph, now a ruler there, was testing his brothers' character through him (Genesis 42-44).
The reunion that followed was one of Scripture's most moving scenes, as Joseph wept over Benjamin and revealed himself to his brothers. A boy named Benjamin carries a name born out of sorrow but reshaped into strength, and a story of family restored.
A blessing to pray over Benjamin
Father, turn any sorrow in this son's life into strength, as You did for Benjamin, and let him be dearly loved by his family and by You. May his story end in restoration. Amen.
