Nathaniel
nuh-THAN-yul · means “Gift of God”
Nathaniel is the common modern spelling of Nathanael, the apostle whom Jesus called an Israelite "in whom there is no deceit" (John 1:47). Nathanael's name means "gift of God." Nathaniel is not the exact spelling used in most English Bibles, but it is simply a well-worn variant of the apostle's own name.
“Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel."”
The story behind the name
Nathaniel has been a steady, well-loved American name for generations, admired for sounding both classic and warm. Most families choosing it today are, whether they realize it or not, spelling out the apostle Nathanael's name in its most familiar modern form.
Nathanael first appears skeptical, asking Philip, "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" (John 1:46). But when he met Jesus, Jesus told him He had seen him under a fig tree before they ever met, and Nathanael's doubt gave way instantly to belief: "Rabbi, you are the Son of God."
Jesus praised his honesty as a man without deceit, and promised him he would see even greater things. A son named Nathaniel carries a name built on an honest question that led straight to genuine faith.
A blessing to pray over Nathaniel
Lord, give this son Nathanael's honesty, quick to question and quicker to believe once he sees You clearly. May he always be a gift, just as his name declares. Amen.
