Zechariah
zek-uh-RY-uh · from Zekharyah · means “The Lord remembers”
Zechariah is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord remembers." The Old Testament prophet Zechariah encouraged the exiles to finish rebuilding the temple through vivid visions of God's future king, while in the New Testament, another Zechariah, a priest, was struck silent until he named his miracle son John the Baptist.
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.”
The story behind the name
The prophet Zechariah ministered after the Babylonian exile, encouraging discouraged returnees to finish rebuilding the temple through a series of striking visions, including a golden lampstand and a coming king riding humbly on a donkey (Zechariah 4, 9).
Centuries later, another Zechariah, a faithful priest, was told by the angel Gabriel that his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear a son, John, who would prepare the way for the Messiah. Because he doubted, Zechariah was struck mute until the child was born (Luke 1).
When Zechariah's voice returned, he burst into prophecy and praise, blessing God for remembering His covenant and sending salvation (Luke 1:68-79). A boy named Zechariah carries a name declaring that the Lord remembers His promises, even after long silence.
A blessing to pray over Zechariah
Father, may this son trust that You remember every promise You have made over his life, even through seasons of silence, and may his voice one day rise in praise. Amen.
