Jude

JOOD · from Yehudah · means Praised; praise

Jude comes from the Greek Ioudas, rooted in the Hebrew Yehudah, meaning "praised" or "praise." Likely a brother of Jesus who did not believe until after the resurrection, Jude wrote a short, urgent New Testament letter urging believers to contend for the faith and closing with one of Scripture's most beloved doxologies.

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy, to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
Jude 1:24-25 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jude introduces himself simply as "a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James" (Jude 1:1), a humility notable given that Jude was likely one of Jesus' own brothers, someone who grew up alongside Him and did not fully believe until later.

His short letter is urgent, written to believers facing false teachers, urging them to "contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people" (Jude 1:3). It is a call to stand firm without wavering.

Jude ends his letter with words spoken over believers for two thousand years since, a doxology of hope to the One who is able to keep us from stumbling (Jude 1:24-25). A boy named Jude carries a name that means praised, and a legacy of steadfast, humble faith.

A blessing to pray over Jude

Lord, keep this son from stumbling like Jude promised, and give him a faith worth contending for. May his life be steady praise to You all his days. Amen.
