Ezekiel

ih-ZEE-kee-uhl · from Yechezqel · means God strengthens, God will strengthen

Ezekiel is a Hebrew name meaning "God strengthens" or "God will strengthen." A priest turned prophet exiled in Babylon, Ezekiel delivered some of Scripture's most vivid visions, including wheels within wheels and a valley of dry bones brought to life, promising Israel's restoration through God's power alone.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Ezekiel was a priest carried into exile in Babylon, where God gave him startling visions meant to speak to a hopeless, scattered people. He saw the glory of the Lord above wheeled creatures and was called to be a watchman for the house of Israel (Ezekiel 1, 3).

God's most famous vision through Ezekiel came in a valley full of dry bones. As Ezekiel prophesied at God's command, the bones rattled together, grew tendons and flesh, and stood up a vast living army, a picture of national and spiritual resurrection (Ezekiel 37).

Ezekiel also promised a new heart and a new spirit for God's people, a heart of flesh replacing a heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26). A boy named Ezekiel carries a name of God's strengthening power, able to bring life to what looks utterly dead.

A blessing to pray over Ezekiel

Lord, strengthen this son as his name declares, and give him a heart that stays soft and alive to You no matter how dry the seasons around him become. Amen.
