Gabriel

GAY-bree-uhl · from Gavriel · means God is my strength, man of God

Gabriel is a Hebrew name meaning "God is my strength" or "man of God." Gabriel is one of only two angels named in Scripture, appearing to Daniel with prophetic explanation, to Zechariah to announce John the Baptist's birth, and to Mary to announce that she would bear Jesus, the Son of God.

The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God."
Luke 1:30 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Gabriel first appears to the prophet Daniel, explaining visions of the future and giving him understanding of things to come (Daniel 8, 9). He comes as a messenger sent directly from God's presence, entrusted with revealing what was hidden.

Centuries later, Gabriel appeared to the priest Zechariah in the temple, announcing that his prayer had been heard and his wife Elizabeth would bear a son, John, who would prepare the way for the Lord. When Zechariah doubted, Gabriel identified himself plainly: "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God" (Luke 1:19).

Gabriel's most famous appearance came to a young woman named Mary in Nazareth, announcing that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and give birth to Jesus, the Son of the Most High (Luke 1:26-38). A boy named Gabriel carries the name of God's own messenger, sent to announce the greatest news the world has ever received.

A blessing to pray over Gabriel

Lord, may this son carry good news wherever he goes, strong in Your strength like Gabriel, and may his life announce Your goodness to everyone he meets. Amen.
