Marie

muh-REE · means Beloved, or bitter (debated)

Marie is the French form of Mary, or Miriam, a name whose precise Hebrew meaning is debated, with "beloved" and "bitter" both proposed by scholars. It is not itself the exact form found in most Bible translations, but it derives directly from Mary, the mother of Jesus.

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Marie has been used across France and much of Europe for centuries and became one of the most common American girls' names of the early twentieth century, often given in honor of Mary.

Mary was a young woman in Nazareth when the angel Gabriel told her she would carry the Son of God, and she answered simply, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled" (Luke 1:38). She accepted a calling that would bring both wonder and heartache.

Her song of praise, now called the Magnificat, declares that God "has been mindful of the humble state of his servant" (Luke 1:48). A daughter named Marie carries a name worn by history's most honored mother, humble and favored both.

A blessing to pray over Marie

Father, may this daughter answer You with Mary's simple trust, whatever You ask of her. Fill her spirit with a song of praise all her days. Amen.
