Jessica
JESS-ih-kuh · means “He sees, or gift”
Jessica is a name most historians trace to Iscah, a woman mentioned briefly in Genesis 11:29, whose Hebrew name likely means "he sees" or "the Lord sees." William Shakespeare is widely credited with coining the modern spelling Jessica for a character in The Merchant of Venice, drawing on that older biblical name. It is an honest, if roundabout, biblical root.
“The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milkah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah.”
The story behind the name
Jessica became one of the most popular American girls' names of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and remains widely familiar today, largely thanks to Shakespeare's use of the name centuries after the obscure biblical Iscah first appears in Genesis.
Iscah herself receives only a single mention in Scripture, listed among the family of Abram's brother Haran as a daughter alongside Milcah, who would go on to marry Nahor (Genesis 11:29). Nothing else about her life is recorded.
It is a striking reminder that even a name with almost no biblical story attached still carries real meaning, "the Lord sees," a truth that outlasts how little Scripture tells us about the person who first bore it. A daughter named Jessica carries the quiet promise that God sees her fully, even in seasons that feel unrecorded and unnoticed.
A blessing to pray over Jessica
Father, let this daughter know she is seen by You, even in ordinary or hidden seasons. Give her grace to trust that her story matters to You. Amen.
