Mephibosheth

meh-FIB-oh-sheth · means From the mouth of shame

Mephibosheth is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as dispeller of shame. The son of Jonathan, he was disabled as a child but was later restored to honor and invited to eat at King David's table. His story highlights a legacy of covenant faithfulness, restoration, and deep grace.

Don’t be afraid, David said to him, for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.
2 Samuel 9:7 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan and the grandson of King Saul. At age five, when news of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan arrived, his nurse fled with him, and in her haste, he fell and became disabled in both feet. He grew up in obscurity, far from the royal court, expecting only danger.

However, King David sought to show God's kindness to anyone remaining of Saul's house for the sake of his covenant with Jonathan. David summoned Mephibosheth, restored all his family's land, and invited him to eat at the royal table as one of the king's own sons. This beautiful act transformed his life from isolation to royal honor.

Mephibosheth lived under the king's provision, representing how God's grace rescues and restores us. His story shows that our physical limitations or past family tragedies do not prevent us from enjoying fellowship with the King. A boy named Mephibosheth carries a legacy of redemption, grace, and restoration.
