Asher
ASH-er · from Asher · means “Happy, blessed”
Asher is a Hebrew name meaning "happy" or "blessed," spoken by his mother Leah when she said other women would call her blessed (Genesis 30:13). Asher became the ancestor of one of Israel's twelve tribes, and Jacob's later blessing over him promised rich food fit for a king.
“Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher.”
The story behind the name
Asher was born to Jacob and Leah's servant Zilpah, and Leah named him Asher, meaning happy, saying that women would call her blessed (Genesis 30:12-13). His name itself became a small declaration of gratitude in the middle of a complicated family story.
When Jacob blessed his twelve sons near the end of his life, he said of Asher that his food would be rich, and he would provide delicacies fit for a king (Genesis 49:20). The tribe of Asher was later given fertile land along the coast, known for its abundance.
Moses' final blessing on the tribes also singled out Asher as most blessed among the sons, favored by his brothers (Deuteronomy 33:24). A boy named Asher carries a name that speaks of happiness, blessing, and abundance.
