Jason

JAY-suhn · means Healer

Jason is a Greek name meaning "healer" or "one who cures." In the New Testament, Jason was a hospitable believer in Thessalonica who risked his own safety to shelter Paul and Silas from an angry mob. His name stands for courage, hospitality, and brotherly support.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: "These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here, and Jason has welcomed them into his house."
Acts 17:6 (NIV)

The story behind the name

In the Book of Acts, Jason welcomed Paul and Silas into his home during their missionary journey through Thessalonica. While Paul preached the gospel in the local synagogue, a crowd of jealous opponents gathered to stop them. When they could not find Paul and Silas, the mob dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials.

The angry crowd accused Jason of treason, claiming he was harboring men who went against Caesar's decrees by proclaiming another king, Jesus. Jason remained calm and steadfast, posting the required bond to secure the believers' release and protect the apostles. His brave hospitality allowed the Thessalonian church to take root during a time of intense hostility.

Paul later mentions Jason in Romans as one of his relatives and fellow workers who sent greetings to the church in Rome. His life is a testament to the quiet, courageous believers who supported the apostles and risked their lives to advance the gospel. A boy named Jason carries a name of healing and a legacy of protective, courageous hospitality.
