Mia

MEE-uh · means Mine, or a short form of Maria

Mia's exact origin is genuinely debated: some trace it to Italian and Scandinavian terms of endearment meaning "mine," while many name scholars also connect it as a short form of Maria, the Latin and Italian form of Mary. Within a Christian baby-name context, its clearest tie is to Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God."
Luke 1:30 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Mia has become one of the most popular girls' names across the English-speaking world since the 2000s, loved for being short, warm, and easy to say in many languages at once.

When traced to Maria, the name reaches back to Mary of Nazareth, greeted by the angel Gabriel with the words, "You have found favor with God" (Luke 1:30). Mary accepted a calling that would upend her ordinary life and shape the whole story that followed.

She responded not with fear but with worship, singing out, "My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47). A daughter named Mia can carry that same quiet association with Mary, favored, humble, and quick to praise.

A blessing to pray over Mia

Father, let this daughter find her worth in Your favor alone. Give her a heart that turns naturally to praise, like Mary's did, in ordinary days and extraordinary ones alike. Amen.
