Mishael

MISH-ah-el · means Who is what God is?

Mishael is a Hebrew name meaning who is what God is. He is best known as the Hebrew companion of Daniel, renamed Meshach in Babylon, who courageously stood in the fiery furnace rather than worship a golden idol. His story is a powerful testament to faith, courage, and divine rescue.

Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, 'Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!' So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire,

The story behind the name

Mishael was a young man of noble descent who was carried off to exile in Babylon alongside Daniel, Hananiah, and Azariah. Refusing to defile themselves with the royal food, they excelled in wisdom and stood before the king. Their Hebrew names kept them anchored to their true identity in God.

When King Nebuchadnezzar erected a massive golden image, Mishael and his companions refused to bow down. They declared that their God was able to save them, but even if He did not, they would not worship idols. Their unwavering stance resulted in them being thrown into a blazing furnace.

In the midst of the flames, a fourth figure appeared, looking like a son of the gods, and protected them from harm. They emerged without even the smell of smoke on their clothes, prompting the king to praise the God of Israel. Mishael's story demonstrates that God stands with His people in their darkest trials.
