Moises
moh-ee-SESS · means “Drawn out of the water”
Moises is the Spanish form of Moses, meaning "drawn out" (of the water). It is not itself the spelling used in most English Bibles, but it is simply Moses' name as spoken across the Spanish-speaking world, carrying forward the story of the man God used to lead Israel out of slavery in Egypt.
“She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."”
The story behind the name
Moises has long been common throughout Latin America and Spain, and it has grown familiar in the United States alongside the broader use of Moses, chosen by families who want a name that points straight to one of Scripture's greatest deliverers.
Moses was pulled from the Nile as a baby by Pharaoh's own daughter, saved from a death decree by his mother's courage and a basket of reeds (Exodus 2). Decades later, God met him at a burning bush and sent him back to Egypt to demand Pharaoh let His people go.
Moses led Israel out of slavery, through the parted Red Sea, and to the edge of the promised land, receiving God's law at Sinai along the way (Exodus 14, 20). A son named Moises carries the name of a reluctant leader whom God used to set an entire nation free.
A blessing to pray over Moises
Father, just as You drew Moses out of danger and gave him a purpose, draw this son close and use him for Your good plans. Give him courage to lead when You call him to it. Amen.
