Jeremiah is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as "the Lord will lift up" or "appointed by the Lord." Known as the weeping prophet, Jeremiah faithfully warned Judah of coming judgment for decades, often at great personal cost, while also proclaiming God's promise of a future new covenant.

The story behind the name

God called Jeremiah as a young man, telling him, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" and appointing him a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5). Jeremiah protested that he was too young, but God promised to be with him.

For over forty years Jeremiah warned Jerusalem of coming judgment, weeping over a people who would not listen, and was mocked, imprisoned, and thrown into a muddy cistern for his message. Still he kept speaking, unable to hold back the word God had placed in him.

Yet Jeremiah also carried hope, promising a day when God would make a new covenant, writing His law on hearts rather than stone tablets (Jeremiah 31:33). A boy named Jeremiah carries a name of faithful perseverance, called by God before birth and sustained by Him through every hardship.
