Priscilla

prih-SIL-uh · from Priscilla · means Ancient, venerable

Priscilla is a Latin name meaning "ancient" or "venerable." Alongside her husband Aquila, Priscilla was a tentmaker, a close partner of the apostle Paul, and a teacher who helped instruct the eloquent preacher Apollos "more accurately" in the way of God (Acts 18:26).

When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
Acts 18:26 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Priscilla and her husband Aquila were tentmakers who worked alongside Paul in Corinth and traveled with him to Ephesus, becoming trusted partners in his ministry (Acts 18:1-3, 18). Paul later called them his "co-workers in Christ Jesus" who had risked their lives for him (Romans 16:3-4).

When a gifted teacher named Apollos arrived in Ephesus preaching boldly but incompletely about Jesus, Priscilla and Aquila took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately (Acts 18:26). Priscilla is often named first among the couple, suggesting her prominent role in teaching and ministry.

Churches even met in Priscilla and Aquila's home in several cities. A daughter named Priscilla carries a name of quiet wisdom and steady partnership in the work of the gospel, unafraid to teach and to serve alongside others.

A blessing to pray over Priscilla

Lord, give this daughter the wisdom and partnership of Priscilla, ready to teach with gentleness and serve alongside others for the sake of Your gospel. May her home be a place where truth is explained with love. Amen.
