Martha

MAR-thuh · from Marta · means Lady, mistress of the house

Martha is an Aramaic name meaning "lady" or "mistress of the house." Sister of Mary and Lazarus, Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and, after her brother's death, made one of the boldest declarations of faith in the Gospels: "I believe that you are the Messiah" (John 11:27).

"Yes, Lord," she replied, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
John 11:27 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Martha is introduced welcoming Jesus into her home, busy with preparations while her sister Mary sat listening at His feet. When Martha complained, Jesus gently corrected her, saying Mary had chosen what was better, yet He never doubted Martha's love or devotion (Luke 10:38-42).

When Martha's brother Lazarus died, she went out to meet Jesus even before He reached the village, saying, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died" (John 11:21). Jesus told her He was the resurrection and the life, and Martha answered with striking clarity: "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God" (John 11:27).

Jesus then raised Lazarus from the dead, honoring Martha's faith. A daughter named Martha carries a name of hospitality and heartfelt devotion, a woman who served Jesus with her hands and confessed Him with her whole heart.

A blessing to pray over Martha

Lord, give this daughter Martha's willing heart to serve and Martha's clear faith to believe. May she know You not only through her hands but through a deep confession of who You are. Amen.
