Stephen
STEE-vun · from Stephanos · means “Crown, wreath”
Stephen comes from the Greek Stephanos, meaning "crown" or "wreath." A man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, Stephen was chosen to serve the early church and became its first martyr, dying with a prayer of forgiveness for those who stoned him.
“While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."”
The story behind the name
Stephen was chosen as one of seven men "known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom" to oversee the daily distribution of food to widows in the growing Jerusalem church (Acts 6:3-5). Scripture says he did great wonders and signs among the people.
Brought before the religious council on false charges, Stephen delivered a sweeping defense of God's faithfulness through Israel's history, then boldly confronted his accusers. Enraged, they dragged him out and stoned him while he prayed, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them" (Acts 7:59-60).
Stephen's death, witnessed approvingly by a young man named Saul, became a turning point that scattered and strengthened the early church. A boy named Stephen carries a name that means crown, honoring a faith so bright it shone even in death.
A blessing to pray over Stephen
Lord, fill this son with faith and grace like Stephen's, steady enough to forgive and bold enough to stand for truth. May his life wear a crown of quiet courage. Amen.
