Timothy
TIM-oh-thee · from Timotheos · means “Honoring God; God's honor”
Timothy comes from the Greek Timotheos, meaning "honoring God" or "God's honor," from time, "honor," and theos, "God." Raised in faith by his mother and grandmother, Timothy became Paul's beloved son in the faith and a young pastor entrusted with two of Paul's letters.
“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”
The story behind the name
Timothy grew up under the sincere faith first found in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, a faith Paul says he was confident lived in Timothy too (2 Timothy 1:5). That early foundation shaped a young man Paul trusted enough to bring along on his missionary journeys.
Though young, Timothy carried real responsibility in the churches, and Paul urged him not to let anyone look down on his youth, but to be an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Paul called him his true son in the faith.
Two New Testament letters bear Timothy's name as their recipient, full of Paul's fatherly instruction and affection. A boy named Timothy carries a name that means honoring God, and a legacy of faith passed down through generations of family.
A blessing to pray over Timothy
Father, root this son's faith deep like Timothy's, planted by faithful family and strengthened by Your word. May his life honor You in speech, love, and purity from his youth. Amen.
