A Prayer for Friendship

Pray for friendship by thanking God for the people He has placed in your life and asking Him for the kind of loyalty described in Proverbs 17:17, a friend who loves at all times. This prayer asks for both good friends and the grace to be one, especially in hard seasons.

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)

A prayer

Lord, thank You for the friends You have placed in my life, and for the ones I am still hoping to find. Friendship has not always come easily for me. I have been disappointed before, and I have disappointed others too. Teach me to be the kind of friend Proverbs 17:17 describes, one who loves steadily, not just when it is convenient. Bring people into my life who will tell me the truth, celebrate with me, and stay close when things get difficult. If I am lonely right now, remind me that You see it, and ask You to open a door toward real connection. Give me courage to reach out first instead of waiting to be noticed. And where I have old friendships worth repairing, give me humility to try again. Thank You for never leaving me, even when people have. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Friendship is one of the plainest gifts in Scripture, and one of the easiest to overlook until it is missing. Proverbs 17:17 does not describe friendship as effortless. It describes loyalty that holds during adversity, which means real friendship gets tested, not just enjoyed.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 adds another layer, noting that two are better than one because when either falls, the other can help them up. That picture is practical, almost physical. Good friends are the ones who show up with a hand out, not just good wishes from a distance.

If you are lonely right now, it can feel like everyone else has an easy circle of friends and you are standing outside it. That is rarely the full truth. Most people are hoping for the same kind of loyal companionship you are, which means a small, honest step toward someone else might be exactly what both of you need.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about true friendship?

Proverbs 17:17 says a friend loves at all times, describing loyalty that holds up under pressure, not just in easy seasons. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 adds that two are better than one, because friends can lift each other up when one of them stumbles or struggles.

How do I pray for God to send me good friends?

Ask God honestly for companionship, naming your loneliness rather than hiding it. Pray for discernment to recognize healthy friendships, and ask for courage to take the first step toward someone rather than waiting passively for connection to arrive.

Is it okay to pray for a specific friendship to be restored?

Yes. It is honest and appropriate to ask God to heal a specific friendship, while also asking for humility and wisdom about your own part in what went wrong. God does not force reconciliation, but He often works through a willing, humble heart.
