A Prayer for Safe Travel
Lord, before I set out, I ask for your protection over this trip. Watch over the roads, the flights, the unfamiliar places I'll pass through. Keep my mind alert and my body safe, and give wisdom to everyone traveling alongside me. I know you watch over my coming and going, so I place this whole journey, the parts I've planned and the parts I haven't, into your hands. Calm any anxiety I feel about travel, delays, or the unknown, and replace it with confidence that you go before me and stay with me the entire way.
Watch over the people I'm leaving behind too, and bring me safely back to them when this trip is done. Thank you for being a God who cares about the details of an ordinary journey, not just the big moments of life. I trust you with every mile. In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm 121 was likely sung by travelers making their way up to Jerusalem, people who knew the road ahead held real risks, weather, terrain, and bandits among them. Its closing promise, that God watches over our coming and going, was written for people who needed practical reassurance, not just poetic comfort.
Praying before a trip doesn't erase the ordinary uncertainties of travel, traffic, weather, delayed flights. It does something different, it hands those uncertainties to someone bigger than your itinerary. That shift, from carrying the worry yourself to placing it with God, is often where the real peace of this prayer lives.
