Abijah

uh-BY-juh · means Yahweh is my father

Abijah is a Hebrew name meaning Yahweh is my father. Carried by both men and women in Scripture, including a king of Judah and Hezekiah's mother, it serves as a powerful reminder of God's fatherhood and our place in His family. It represents a legacy of prayer and covenant hope.

God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.
2 Chronicles 13:12 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Abijah appears several times in the Old Testament, representing both royalty and priesthood. One notable figure is the son of Rehoboam, who became the second king of Judah. In a time of national conflict, Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim and declared his trust in the covenant promises of God.

Another significant Abijah in Scripture is Hezekiah's mother, whose name is sometimes shortened to Abi (2 Chronicles 29:1). As a queen mother, she helped raise one of Judah's most faithful kings, who restored temple worship. Her influence highlights the quiet but powerful role of godly parents in shaping history.

The name was also carried by a priest in the days of King David, establishing a lineage of worship. Centuries later, Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, served in the priestly division of Abijah (Luke 1:5). This connects the name directly to the promise and preparation for the Messiah.
