Hezekiah
hez-uh-KY-uh · from Chizqiyahu · means “The Lord has strengthened”
Hezekiah is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord has strengthened." He was one of Judah's most righteous kings, who reopened the temple, destroyed pagan altars, and trusted God during the terrifying Assyrian siege of Jerusalem. His story is a powerful testament to the strength God provides in times of crisis.
“Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him.”
The story behind the name
Hezekiah became king of Judah at a young age, inheriting a kingdom that had turned away from the Lord. He immediately began reforms, reopening the temple, restoring the Passover, and smashing the idols that had led the people astray. Scripture records that he trusted the Lord completely, keeping His commands like no other king before or after him.
When the Assyrian army surrounded Jerusalem, their commander mocked the Lord and demanded surrender. Hezekiah went to the temple, spread the enemy's threatening letter before God, and prayed for deliverance. God answered through the prophet Isaiah, sending His angel to defeat the Assyrian camp without Judah firing a single arrow.
Later in life, Hezekiah fell terminally ill but prayed earnestly, and God granted him fifteen additional years of life. A boy named Hezekiah carries a legacy of restoration, bold prayer, and trusting that God will strengthen those who rely on Him. His name is a constant reminder that our true strength comes from the Lord.
