uh-BISH-eye · means “My father is a gift”
Abishai is a Hebrew name meaning my father is a gift. In the Old Testament, Abishai is a fierce warrior, David's nephew, and a leader of the king's elite forces who saves David's life in battle and remains intensely loyal. His name represents strength, protection, and fierce devotion.
“But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, 'Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.'”
The story behind the name
Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, is one of David's most trusted companions in the wilderness. He famously volunteers to go down into Saul's sleeping camp with David, where he offers to pin Saul to the ground with a spear in a single stroke. David restrains him, teaching him to respect the Lord's anointed, showing how Abishai's zeal was shaped by David's leadership.
Throughout David's reign, Abishai leads troops in major military campaigns against the Ammonites, Edomites, and Philistines. During a later battle, when a giant named Ishbi-Benob threatens to kill David, Abishai quickly intervenes, kills the giant, and saves the king's life. His bravery leads David's men to declare that the king must no longer go to battle.
Though Abishai is sometimes impetuous, his absolute loyalty and military skill make him one of David's three mighty men. His story shows a life dedicated to protecting the king and serving his nation with courage. A boy named Abishai is inspired to use his strength to protect others and stand firm in his loyalty.
