Abner
AB-ner · from Avner · means “My father is a lamp”
Abner is a Hebrew name meaning "my father is a lamp" or "father of light." He was the cousin of King Saul and the commander of Israel's army, known for his military prowess, loyalty, and eventual efforts to unite the kingdom under David. His story is one of loyalty and strength.
“Then the king said to his men, "Do you not realize that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel today?"”
The story behind the name
Abner served King Saul faithfully for many years, commanding the armies of Israel and standing as a key protector of the throne. He was present when David defeated Goliath, and he later protected Saul during David's years in exile. His loyalty to the crown made him one of the most respected men in Israel.
After Saul's death, Abner initially supported Saul's son Ish-Bosheth to maintain the family line. However, recognizing that God had promised the entire kingdom to David, Abner later worked to bring all of Israel to make a covenant with David. He sought to unite the divided nation in peace and avoid further bloodshed.
Tragically, Abner was murdered by Joab, David's commander, which led David to mourn him deeply and praise his honor. A boy named Abner carries a legacy of military leadership, loyalty, and the pursuit of peace. His name reminds us to be a lamp of guidance and unity in our spheres.
