Santiago

san-tee-AH-go · means Saint James, supplanter

Santiago means "Saint James" in Spanish, combining "santo" (saint) with "Iago," itself a form of Jacob or James. It is not a name in Scripture directly, but it honors James, one of Jesus's twelve apostles and the brother of John, both sons of Zebedee.

He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
Acts 12:2 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Santiago has long been treasured across Spain and Latin America, tied to the great pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela, and it has grown quickly in the United States in recent years.

James was one of the first disciples Jesus called, a fisherman who left his nets alongside his brother John (Matthew 4:21-22). Jesus nicknamed James and John "Boanerges," sons of thunder, likely for their fiery, ambitious temperament (Mark 3:17).

James became one of Jesus's inner circle, present at the transfiguration and in the garden of Gethsemane. He was the first apostle martyred for his faith, put to death by Herod, a cost he paid for following Christ to the very end (Acts 12:2). A boy named Santiago carries the legacy of bold, costly devotion.

A blessing to pray over Santiago
