The story behind the name

Nehemiah served as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in Persia, a position of trust and comfort, when news reached him that Jerusalem's walls lay in ruins and its gates burned. He wept, fasted, and prayed for days before asking the king for permission to return and rebuild (Nehemiah 1).

Once in Jerusalem, Nehemiah organized the people by families, armed workers who held a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, and pressed on despite mockery and threats from surrounding enemies. Against every obstacle, the wall was completed in fifty-two days (Nehemiah 6:15).
