Abram
AY-bram · means “Exalted father”
Abram means "exalted father" in Hebrew, and it was Abraham's original name before God changed it. God called Abram out of his homeland in Genesis 12:1, promising to make him into a great nation, and later renamed him Abraham, "father of many," once that promise began to unfold (Genesis 17:5).
“The Lord had said to Abram, "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you."”
The story behind the name
Abram lived a settled life in Harran until God spoke to him with a call that upended everything: "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you" (Genesis 12:1). Abram was seventy-five, with no children and no map, yet he went anyway.
God promised to bless Abram and to make his name great, and through him, to bless all peoples on earth (Genesis 12:2-3). Abram believed, and Scripture says God "credited it to him as righteousness" (Genesis 15:6), even though the promised son was still years away and Abram's faith wavered more than once along the road.
Years later, once Sarah was expecting the son God had promised, God changed his name to Abraham, sealing the covenant with a new identity to match the new chapter (Genesis 17:5). A son named Abram carries the story of a man who left everything on the strength of a promise not yet fulfilled.
A blessing to pray over Abram
Lord, call this son the way You called Abram, and give him faith to go even before he can see where the road leads. Make his life a blessing to everyone around him. Amen.
