Adriel

AY-dree-el · means Flock of God

Adriel means "flock of God" in Hebrew. He appears in 1 Samuel 18:19 as the Meholathite whom King Saul's daughter Merab married, though she had first been promised to David. It is a quiet appearance in Scripture, but the name itself carries a gentle picture of God as a shepherd who watches over His own.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Psalm 23:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Adriel's name shows up in the middle of a larger story about Saul's shifting promises to David. Saul had said Merab would be given to David, but instead gave her to Adriel the Meholathite (1 Samuel 18:19). Scripture tells us little else about Adriel's own life.

What endures is the meaning of his name itself: flock of God. Throughout Scripture, God is described again and again as a shepherd who knows, gathers, and protects His flock, the same image behind Psalm 23's quiet confidence and Jesus' own description of Himself as the good shepherd (John 10:11).

A son named Adriel carries that gentle picture forward, not a dramatic story of his own, but a name that quietly declares he belongs to God's flock, watched over and known, whatever else his life holds.

A blessing to pray over Adriel

Lord, be this son's shepherd all his days. Let him always know he belongs to Your flock, safe and known no matter where his path leads. Amen.
