Alexandra
al-ig-ZAN-druh · means “Defender of the people”
Alexandra is the feminine form of Alexander, meaning "defender of the people." It is not itself found in Scripture, but its root, Alexander, appears in the New Testament, including a man in Mark's Gospel and others named in Paul's letters, and it carries forward that same sense of standing guard for others.
“A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.”
The story behind the name
Alexandra has been used by royal families across Europe for centuries and has remained a steady, elegant classic in the United States, admired for its strength and history.
The name Alexander appears a few times in the New Testament, among them the son of Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled to carry Jesus's cross on the way to Golgotha (Mark 15:21). That brief, sorrowful walk placed his family's name permanently inside the gospel story.
Paul also mentions men named Alexander in his letters, some who opposed him and one, a coppersmith, who did him great harm (2 Timothy 4:14). The name's meaning, defender of the people, stands as an aspiration worth living up to regardless of any one man's failures. A daughter named Alexandra carries that same calling, to defend and stand for others.
