Elisabeth

ih-LIZ-uh-beth · means God is my oath

Elisabeth is the classic spelling of Elizabeth, meaning "God is my oath." It derives directly from Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, a woman Luke calls righteous, who waited long past hope for a son before an angel told her husband Zechariah that her prayer had been heard.

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee.
Luke 1:26 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Elisabeth has been used across Europe for centuries, often favored over the more common English spelling for its slightly older, more formal look.

Elizabeth was married to Zechariah, a priest, and Luke describes them both as "righteous in the sight of God," yet childless and well past the years most people would expect a child (Luke 1:6-7). While Zechariah served in the temple, an angel told him plainly that Elizabeth would bear a son named John.

When Mary came to visit her soon after, Elizabeth's unborn baby leaped for joy, and she cried out in blessing over her young cousin and the child Mary was carrying (Luke 1:41-45). A daughter named Elisabeth carries a name marked by long-held faith rewarded with unexpected joy.

A blessing to pray over Elisabeth

Father, keep Your oath over this daughter's life the way You kept Your promise to Elizabeth. Fill her with joy whenever Your promises come near. Amen.
