Eliza
ih-LY-zuh · means “God is my oath”
Eliza is a short form of Elizabeth, meaning "God is my oath." It is not a name found directly in Scripture, but it carries forward the story of Elizabeth, the priest's wife whose barren years ended with the birth of John the Baptist, the one who would prepare the way for Jesus.
“But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John."”
The story behind the name
Eliza was widely used in the 1700s and 1800s and has enjoyed a fresh wave of American popularity in recent years, prized for its old-fashioned charm alongside its clear meaning.
Elizabeth and Zechariah were both righteous and both past hoping for a child of their own, when the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and told him his prayer had been heard (Luke 1:13). He was left speechless with doubt until the child was born.
When Zechariah's voice finally returned, he named the boy John, just as the angel had instructed, and his first words were praise to God (Luke 1:64). A daughter named Eliza carries a name built on a promise kept even after it seemed too late.
