Miriam is a Hebrew name whose meaning is debated, traditionally linked to either "bitterness" or "beloved." She was the sister of Moses and Aaron, a prophetess who watched over baby Moses in the Nile and later led Israel in songs of praise after the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20-21).

The story behind the name

As a young girl, Miriam watched from a distance as her baby brother Moses floated in a basket among the reeds of the Nile. When Pharaoh's daughter found him, Miriam boldly stepped forward and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse him, cleverly arranging for their own mother to raise him (Exodus 2:4-8).

Decades later, after God parted the Red Sea and delivered Israel from Pharaoh's army, Miriam took up a tambourine and led the women in a song of victory: "Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted" (Exodus 15:21). Scripture calls her a prophetess, one of the few women given that title in the Old Testament.

Miriam was not without struggle; she faced consequences for challenging Moses' leadership, yet she remained a central figure in Israel's story of deliverance. A daughter named Miriam carries a name of courage, quick thinking, and joyful praise.
