Esteban

es-TEH-bahn · from Stephanos · means Crown

Esteban is the Spanish form of Stephen, meaning "crown." It is not itself the spelling used in most English Bibles, but it carries forward the name of Stephen, the church's first martyr, a man full of faith who was stoned to death for boldly preaching Christ (Acts 7).

While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Acts 7:59-60 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Esteban has been common throughout Spain and Latin America for generations and remains a familiar choice among Spanish-speaking families in the United States, chosen as a strong, historic form of Stephen.

Stephen was one of seven men chosen to serve the early church, described as "full of faith and of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5). When religious leaders dragged him before the Sanhedrin on false charges, Stephen answered with a bold retelling of Israel's whole history, ending with a direct challenge to his accusers.

Enraged, the crowd dragged him out and stoned him, while Stephen prayed for their forgiveness and saw heaven opened, with Jesus standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:55-60). A son named Esteban carries the name of Scripture's first martyr, whose faith did not waver even facing death.

A blessing to pray over Esteban

Lord, give this son Stephen's steady faith, ready to forgive and unshaken even under great pressure. Fill him full of Your Spirit all his days. Amen.
