Evan

EV-un · means God is gracious

Evan is the Welsh form of John, meaning "God is gracious." It descends from the same Hebrew root, Yochanan, carried by John the Baptist and John the Apostle. Evan itself is not found in Scripture, but it holds the same meaning and biblical heritage as every other form of John.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"
John 1:29 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Evan moved out of Wales into broad popularity across the English-speaking world by the late twentieth century, favored for its warm, easy sound alongside its rich meaning.

John the Baptist, one namesake behind Evan, spent his ministry in the wilderness, wearing camel's hair and eating locusts and wild honey, entirely unconcerned with comfort or reputation (Matthew 3:4). His single purpose was to prepare people's hearts for the Messiah.

When Jesus finally came to him at the Jordan, John recognized Him at once: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). A boy named Evan carries a name shaped by that same clarity of purpose, a life spent pointing others toward grace.

A blessing to pray over Evan

Father, give this son John's clear eyes to recognize You at work and John's willing heart to point others toward Your grace. Amen.
