Sean
SHAWN · means “God is gracious”
Sean is the Irish form of John, meaning "God is gracious." It comes through the Irish Sean, itself descended from the Hebrew Yochanan by way of Latin and French. Sean is not a name in Scripture, but it carries the same root and meaning as John the Baptist and John the Apostle.
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
The story behind the name
Sean rose from Ireland into wide use across the English-speaking world through the twentieth century, valued for its short, strong sound and its clear tie to a name of deep biblical roots.
John the Baptist, the man behind the name, was set apart before birth, filled with the Holy Spirit even in his mother's womb (Luke 1:15). He lived simply in the wilderness and called crowds to turn back to God, pointing always away from himself: "He must become greater; I must become less" (John 3:30).
John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, and a voice from heaven declared, "This is my Son, whom I love" (Matthew 3:17). A boy named Sean carries a name rooted in that same humble, pointing-forward faith, a life spent making room for God's grace.
A blessing to pray over Sean
Father, give this son a humble heart like John's, quick to point toward You and slow to seek his own glory. Fill him with Your grace from his earliest days. Amen.
