Ezra

EZ-ruh · from Ezra · means Help

Ezra is a Hebrew name meaning "help," fitting for a priest and scribe who led a group of exiles back to Jerusalem and helped restore God's law among the people. Ezra devoted himself to studying, obeying, and teaching Scripture, and his book bears his name in the Old Testament.

For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.
Ezra 7:10 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Ezra was a priest and skilled teacher of the Law of Moses, living among the Jewish exiles in Persia. When King Artaxerxes granted permission for a group to return to Jerusalem, Ezra led them, trusting God for protection on the dangerous journey rather than asking for a Persian military escort (Ezra 7-8).

Scripture describes Ezra's whole approach to life in one verse: he devoted himself to study the Law of the Lord, to observe it, and to teach its decrees and laws in Israel (Ezra 7:10). When he arrived in Jerusalem and found the people had drifted from God's ways, he led them in public confession and renewal.

Later, Ezra stood before the assembled people and read the Law aloud from daybreak until noon while they listened attentively (Nehemiah 8). A boy named Ezra carries a name of help and a legacy of loving God's word enough to study it, live it, and teach it to others.

A blessing to pray over Ezra

Lord, make this son a student and teacher of Your word like Ezra, devoted to knowing You and helping others find their way back to You. Be his help all his days. Amen.
