Ittai

IT-ay-ee · means With me

Ittai is a Hebrew name meaning with me or companion. Though a foreigner from Gath, he swore absolute loyalty to King David during Absalom's rebellion, leading a division of the army. His story highlights a legacy of covenant loyalty, courage, and choosing to walk with God's people.

But Ittai replied to the king, 'As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.'
2 Samuel 15:21 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Ittai the Gittite was a warrior from the Philistine city of Gath who pledged his allegiance to King David. When Absalom led a rebellion and David was forced to flee Jerusalem, Ittai and his men marched with the king. David urged him to return to his own land, as he was a foreigner newly arrived.

Ittai refused to leave, swearing a solemn oath that he would stay with David whether it meant life or death. Touched by his devotion, David placed him in command of a third of his army. Ittai's loyalty was vital in defending the kingdom during one of its darkest hours.

His name, meaning with me, perfectly describes his companion heart and deep commitment. His story shows that belonging to God's kingdom is defined by faith and loyalty rather than background. A boy named Ittai carries a legacy of courage, covenant friendship, and unwavering loyalty.
