Jake

JAYK · means He grasps the heel, or supplanter

Jake is an English short form of Jacob, meaning "he grasps the heel" or, by extension, "supplanter." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it carries forward the story of Jacob, the patriarch whose name God later changed to Israel after he wrestled with God and would not let go.

Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."
Genesis 32:28 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jake grew from a nickname into a fully independent name across the United States and Britain through the twentieth century, valued for its easy, friendly sound.

Jacob was born grasping his twin brother Esau's heel, and he spent much of his early life scheming and striving, tricking his way into a blessing and a birthright he wanted badly (Genesis 27). He ran from home and spent years working for his uncle Laban before finally turning back.

On the way home, Jacob wrestled all night with a mysterious figure and refused to let go until he received a blessing. He came away renamed Israel, meaning "he struggles with God," and walked with a limp but also with a new identity (Genesis 32:28). A boy named Jake carries the story of a man who struggled honestly with God and was changed by it.

A blessing to pray over Jake
