Josephine
joh-suh-FEEN · means “God will increase, God will add”
Josephine is the feminine form of Joseph, meaning "God will increase" or "God will add." It is not itself found in Scripture, but it derives from Joseph, son of Jacob, sold into slavery by his own brothers and later used by God to save his entire family from famine.
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all along to bring about this present good.”
The story behind the name
Josephine has been used across Europe for centuries and enjoyed a strong resurgence in the United States in recent decades, admired for its old-fashioned elegance.
Joseph was his father's favored son, resented by his brothers, sold into slavery, and falsely imprisoned in Egypt, yet through every setback God was quietly at work. He eventually rose to become second only to Pharaoh, storing grain that would save Egypt and his own family from famine.
When his brothers finally stood before him, terrified, Joseph told them, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20). A daughter named Josephine carries a name rooted in that same hope, that God can turn even betrayal and hardship toward good.
