Michael
MY-kuhl · from Mikha'el · means “Who is like God?”
Michael is a Hebrew name meaning "who is like God," phrased as a question that expects the answer no one. Michael is described in Scripture as a great archangel and prince who protects God's people, fighting for Daniel, disputing with the devil over Moses's body, and leading heaven's armies against the dragon in Revelation.
“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.”
The story behind the name
Daniel calls Michael "one of the chief princes" who came to help against spiritual opposition, and later "the great prince who protects your people," a guardian assigned specifically to defend Israel (Daniel 10:13, 12:1).
Jude records a striking scene of Michael the archangel disputing with the devil over the body of Moses, yet even then not bringing a slanderous accusation but saying, "The Lord rebuke you!" (Jude 1:9). It shows a warrior who still submits fully to God's authority.
In Revelation, Michael leads the armies of heaven in war against the dragon, and the dragon is defeated and hurled down (Revelation 12:7-9). A boy named Michael carries a name that asks who could ever compare to God, and answers with a life of strength placed fully in His service.
