Joseph

JOH-sehf · from Yosef · means May he add

Joseph is a Hebrew name meaning "may he add" or "God will increase." In the Old Testament, Joseph saved his family from famine in Egypt. In the New Testament, Joseph acted as the faithful, protective earthly father of Jesus. His name represents integrity, providence, and devotion.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
Genesis 50:20 (NIV)

The story behind the name

In the Old Testament, Joseph was the beloved son of Jacob whose brothers sold him into slavery. Through years of betrayal and unjust imprisonment in Egypt, he remained faithful to God and was eventually raised to second in command over the nation. When a severe famine struck, Joseph preserved the lives of his family, famously telling his brothers that what they intended for evil, God intended for good (Genesis 50:20).

In the New Testament, Joseph of Nazareth was a righteous man betrothed to Mary when she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Prompted by an angel in dreams, he took Mary as his wife and obediently protected the young child Jesus from King Herod by fleeing to Egypt. His quiet faithfulness provided a safe home for the Savior during His childhood.

Joseph's story in both testaments is a beautiful demonstration of God's sovereignty and care for His people. Whether facing trials in Egyptian prisons or protecting the infant Savior, these men of faith showed remarkable integrity and trust in God's plan. A boy named Joseph carries a legacy of quiet strength, moral courage, and trust in divine providence.
